MOBILE MATERIAL HANDLING SYSTEM

IMPROVES SAFETY, PRODUCTIVITY, PROFITS

The CargoMaster manufactured by Wayne Engineering, Cedar Falls, IA transforms trailers and vans into versatile mobile material handling system for handling freight. Their customers find that the CargoMaster is an important tool in their delivery systems.

Savage Truck Lines began using the CargoMaster system in September 1999. As an independent Landstar Inway contractor, Kirk Savage, has the opportunity to develop his own customers as well as offering his services throughout the other Landstar system. In recent years of falling profit margins in hauling dry freight Kirk Savage was looking for a way to increase his margins hauling freight. The CargoMaster crane gave Savage just that opportunity.

Savage knew that there were a lot of shippers, shipping hard-to-handle freight to locations without a loading dock. Products ranged from elevators, wheel alignment equipment, medical equipment, ATM machines to video arcade games, and everything in between. Savage estimates that he can recover his investment in his mobile material handling system by hauling 40,000 miles of higher revenue freight thanks to the CargoMaster.
The CargoMaster allows a driver to quickly unload products that would have cost hours of delays in securing manpower or equipment when arriving on a job site.

By way of example, one customer had been using a flatbed to ship his equipment which had electronic controls. Despite the equipment being tarped, water spray worked its way into the control system, damaging it. When the equipment arrived at the destination, forklift had to be rented and brought to the site to unload the shipment.

With the CargoMaster, products are protected from the elements by riding inside a van trailer. There is no need to rent or use forklifts to unload. It is a one-person operation.

Savage says: “My shipper not only has eliminated costly fork lift rentals at the destination but his it eliminates up-front warranty claims from damage during shipment. With the equipment inside a trailer, there is no chance of water or salt spray contaminating the controls.”

When installed inside the trailer, the Cargo Master takes up less then 3% of the cargo space. Placing the crane in the nose of the trailer allows Landstar Inway to haul standard dock to dock freight as well as specialized freight. The 8,000-lb capacity crane ads about 2,350 lbs. to the weight of the trailer. With the crane installed and using sleeper cabs a typical truck can still haul 44,000 lbs of freight.

By the time you read this article Landstar Inway will have added 10 more 8,000 lb cranes in 2001 Fruehauf Fleet Flyer 53’, 102’ wide dry vans equipped with logistic posts 13 gauge on 16-inch centers. The trailers have air-ride suspensions and translucent roofs supplied by Southwest Trailers in Oklahoma City, OK.
