CargoMaster Questions and Answers

What are the requirements for the patented CargoMaster to be installed?

A body constructed with steel posts is best suited for a CargoMaster installation. The gussets which support the rails on which the crane rides are usually welded to the posts. For 2000 lb cranes the post should be made of 16ga material with a spacing of 24”. For 4000 lb cranes the post should be made of 14ga material with a spacing of 16”. For 6000 and 8000 lb cranes the post should be made of 12ga material with a depth (inside face to outside face) of 1.25” and a spacing of 16”. Before committing to the purchase of a trailer or van body, it is best to complete (and submit to WAYNE) a CargoMaster Data Questionnaire to avoid choosing a design that will not support the crane. (It costs you nothing for our engineers to review the trailer data.)

What type of doors work best with the CargoMaster?

Swing style doors are the best candidates for the patented CargoMaster because they allow the crane to be mounted higher in the truck. Generally the taller the truck door opening, the better. Most trailers today are available with 110” rear door heights. When using swing style doors make sure hinges are offset to the outside of the door posts. This usually is not a problem on trailers but occasionally becomes a problem on some straight vans. Rollup doors can be used if you are willing to sacrifice 6 to 8 inches of room in the top of your vehicle.

My truck is constructed with FRP or composite panels, can I install a CargoMaster?

With this type of construction, the answer may vary. You will need to call our factory and discuss with the engineer.

Where can I have my CargoMaster installed?

There are a couple of options available for installation: 1) WAYNE can install the patented CargoMaster at their facility in Cedar Falls IA. 2) Your WAYNE Rep can assist you in finding a facility in your area which could install the CargoMaster.

What is the average time it takes to install a CargoMaster?

The installation time is approximately 45 man hours, which includes the painting. We generally recommend that you schedule 10 to 20 working days for installation.

What additional items do I have to add to the installation kit if I complete installation of the CargoMaster myself?

Wayne Engineering furnishes a complete installation kit with the exception of a few feet of flat bar, used for shims and upper rail ties, and paint for the crane support system.

What is the color of the CargoMaster?

The standard color for the CargoMaster assembly is red and the patented CargoMaster rails are painted white to improve visibility and safety.

What are the available capacities of the patented CargoMaster?

The CargoMaster is available in 4 lifting capacities: 2,000 lbs, 4,000 lbs, 6,000 lbs and 8,000 lbs.

What are the CargoMaster power requirements?

In US and Canadian markets, the standard power supply is 12 V, which the CargoMaster was designed to efficiently utilize. A truck or tractor supplying power to the crane should have at least 2 heavy-duty batteries with an alternator of at least 130 amps.

What if I need to run my CargoMaster without a tractor attached or the tractor engine cannot be run due to dangerous fumes?

The CargoMaster can run between 8 to 15 cycles before the vehicle batteries are depleted. This number varies with the capacity of your crane, distance the load travels, and the condition of the vehicle’s batteries.

How long of an object can the CargoMaster lift?

The CargoMaster standard single fold rails generally allow you to handle loads between 12’ and 14’. Double fold arms can be ordered and allow you to handle loads between 18’ and 22’. Wayne Engineering can always calculate the maximum load size for you once you have your completed and submitted a CargoMaster Data Questionnaire.

Which capacity should I select when purchasing a patented CargoMaster?

If you know exactly what you are moving on a daily basis you will be most satisfied with a crane designed up to that capacity. As a general rule, we do not recommend that you purchase more capacity than is needed. Larger capacity cranes are designed to run slower to provide maximum operator safety.

If you have a general freight delivery schedule and are purchasing a crane, Wayne Engineering generally recommends the 8000 lb capacity CargoMaster crane to handle all your delivery needs.

What is the average life span of a CargoMaster?

There are CargoMasters that have been in service for over 25 years. In general, most of our customers expect to install the same patented WAYNE CargoMaster in 2 trailers over a 12 year period.
